Many of the buildings in Curacao look like they were lifted out of Holland and dropped in the tropics with a Caribbean paint job of bright pastels. It's no surprise, since the southern Caribbean island is an “autonomous dependance” of the Netherlands.

Along with the local Dutch-and-Spanish-based creole language, Papiamento, standard Dutch is still widely spoken here. Cheese, bread and bakery goods, coffee and, of course, Dutch beers are sold everywhere on the island, but local fish and fruit ingredients also have their place in life on Curacao, creating a unique cultural mix.
