Mdina, Malta

The Maltese city of Mdina is filled with 1,000-year-old architecture and blessed with perpetual sunshine. These traits have made it a popular tourist destination, while its tangible historic ambiance most likely made it an easy choice for the show's location scouts.

The narrow cobblestone streets were used in many of season one's King's Landing scenes, and the city's oft-photographed ancient gate was also an important back-drop. Mdina was replaced by Dubrovnik after the first season.
