Airplane Service Station

Located in Powell, Tenn., the Airplane Service Station was built in 1930 by brothers Elmer and Henry Nickle, who hoped to increase business by constructing a unique and visually appealing gas station. The Powell Airplane was a working service station on U.S. Highway 25 until the 1960s when it became a liquor store. Since then, it has also been a produce stand, a bait shop and a used car lot. The plane is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and today, the Airplane Filling Station Preservation Association is working to raise funds to preserve the structure.
