New Zealand

New Zealand offers some of the most spectacular stargazing on the planet, presenting a twinkling sky that almost looks unreal in its cinematic clarity. With limited amounts of light pollution, the island nation allows earthlings to observe the skies above the Southern Hemisphere in amazing, intricate detail. On North Island, observers can visit the Auckland Stardome, while on the South Island visitors can frequent the Mount John Observatory, located near the Southern Alps. This photo of the Milky Way was taken from Okato, a small township in Taranaki on the North Island of New Zealand.
