Etna, Sicily

Mount Etna towers over the Italian island of Sicily. This is a tall volcano, rising to 10,000 feet above sea level. It is a popular skiing destination in the wintertime and cold temperatures are common near the summit at any time of year. The lower slopes' fertile volcanic soil is farmed extensively, and the lush natural landscapes created by this soil provide a wonderful setting for hiking. However, those who venture higher will see one of the most active volcanoes in the world, with hardened lava flows covering vast parts of the upper slopes. It is possible to reach the summit on a guided climb, though the triangular peak can also be viewed from afar. Eruptions are a regular occurrence, with multiple events taking place each year.
