Amana Colonies, Iowa

Iowa's Amana Colonies is a collection of villages whose roots date back to the 1800s, when members of a German Christian sect established the original settlements. A communal society until the mid-20th century, Amana Colonies now holds heritage tours featuring historic structures that were used for agriculture and craftsmanship. The architecture, from buildings to barns to bridges, is unmistakably inspired by designs that were popular in rural Germany.
