South Lombok, Indonesia

Lombok is what Bali was before its tourism boom. Located just to the east of its famous sister, Lombok has beautiful beaches, rushing waterfalls, volcanoes and lush inland areas. The southern part of the island features remote beaches that are well-known to surfers but see little tourist traffic. Most visitors head to the resorts on the western shores of Lombok.

The entire southern coast is a maze of bays, inlets, points and shoreline coated with white sand. Besides a lively surfing scene in some towns in the area (namely Kuta), Lombok has few tourists. Chartering a boat and traveling up and down the coast is a great way to find hidden sand-covered coves known only to local fishermen.
