Big cities are known for their museums. Tourists find other attractions in places like New York City, Washington D.C., Chicago and San Francisco, but going to famous exhibit halls is often a major part of the itinerary for visitors to these metropolises.

Yes, these cities have impressive museums, but many midsize and smaller cities (as well as larger ones that are outside of the tourism loop) also have a respectable list of options. Some of these places have unique niche museums that are unlike anything that can be found in their larger peers.

So whether you like science, art, history, nature or quirky kitsch, these smaller cities deliver when it comes to museums.
