Teatro Massimo Bellini in Sicily

Located in Catania, Sicily, the Teatro Massimo Bellini is the largest opera house in Italy and the third largest in Europe, according to Fodor's Travel. The 1,200-seat theater was named after the locally-born composer Vincenzo Bellini, designed by Milanese architect Carlo Sada and it opened in 1890 after 200 years of delays caused by financial issues, a devastating earthquake, a cholera epidemic and indecision about the theater's location.

You may recognize this opera house from "The Godfather" trilogy, as it makes an appearance at the end of the third movie, where — spoiler alert — Michael's daughter Mary is shot on the theater's massive front steps.
