Life is short, which is why it's so important to make every moment — and impeccably styled outfit — count.
That's the philosophy promoted by the stylish seniors featured in "Advanced Style: Older and Wiser," a gorgeous new photo book by fashion blogger Ari Seth Cohen. Focusing his lens on the delightfully colorful world of senior street style, Cohen pulls back the curtain on a segment of population that's rarely given the opportunity to shine in the spotlight.
And boy, just look at what we're missing out on:
In the photo above, Valerie and Jean (also known as the Idiosyncratic Fashionistas)
pose for a photo on the streets of New York City with fellow
style-conscious women Debra Rapoport, Diana Gabriel and Carol Markel.
Throughout the book, Cohen intersperses his lovely street fashion photography with words of
wisdom and "lifestyle secrets" from sartorially inclined seniors from around the world. As one elderly model, Sue Kreitzman, says:
"I must tell you that I am not really an old lady; just cleverly disguised as one. Art and color keep me young, keep me sane. [...] Be bold, be adventurous. Do profound things, dazzle yourself and the world. Don’t wear beige: it might kill you. Contribute to society, and live large. Life is short, make every moment count. It is never too late to find your passion."
The "Advanced Style" project is also the subject of a 2014 documentary that examines the lives of seven colorful seniors in New York City who are challenging conventional ideas of beauty and aging by taking their personal styles to the next level:
