Mariel Zagunis, fencing

Zagunis, an Oregon native, has brought home several honors in fencing, including two medals at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Since then, she has served as the FIE Senior World Cup Champion in 2011, 2010 and 2009. She also keeps it green. She says, “I volunteer for SOLVE whenever I get the chance.” SOLVE is a nonprofit organization dedicated to expanding, cleaning up and preserving Oregon’s environment, a group that began as S.O.L.V., or Stop Oregon Litter and Vandalism, and evolved into its current, broader mission. Zagunis says she’s done everything from picking up litter to planting trees to removing invasive species.
