The Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) is now accepting applications for a residential summer camp for high school students interested in pursuing an environmental career. This year will mark the ninth year of the department’s Environmental Careers Outdoors Camp (ECO Camp). The camp is expecting to host 20-25 students for a six-day session that begins on July 11, 2010.

In order to apply for one of these limited spots, students must meet the following criteria:

  • Entering the 10th through 12th grade or have just completed 12th grade
  • Have a C average or better
  • No history of drug use, criminal activity, or repeated school suspensions
  • Pennsylvania resident
  • Have parental consent
Interested students will need to submit an application, a letter of recommendation, and a 150-200 word essay detailing their outdoor interests, why they wish to participate in the ECO Camp, and how the experience will help them achieve their personal goals.

Campers will be exposed to a variety of outdoors and conservation topics including water quality assessments, geological field studies, and developing forestry skills. Students will also be able to gain field experience from environmental professionals.

Once completing the camp, attendees will be eligible for conservation internships, job-shadowing positions, and even return to the camp in the future to serve as a camp leader.

The application deadline for the 2010 Pennsylvania ECO Camp is April 1, 2010. Download an ECO Camp application (PDF) for more information.
