Hank Shaw: Hunter, writer, forager

Political reporter Hank Shaw saw the decline of the newspaper industry as an opportunity to change careers. He said goodbye to the newsroom and went from bagging Sacramento politicos to bagging big game, turning a lifetime passion for the outdoors into a food-writing gig. Launched in 2007, his blog, Hunter Angler Cook, bridges the cultural divide between the hook-and-gun crowd and farmers market-types. He’s educating hunters about cooking techniques and educating locavores to think beyond community gardens. Hard work, two James Beard nominations and a nod from the New York Times for his book, “Hunt, Gather, Cook,” enables him to pursue his hobbies professionally.
