Federal Correctional Institution in Phoenix, Ariz.

Federal Correctional Institute Phoenix saves $6,700 annually thanks to the solar-electric system the facility uses to heat 50,000 gallons of water each day. That water is 70 percent of all the hot water used by the prison’s employees and 1,200 prisoners every day. Thanks to its parabolic trough concentrator modules, the prison offsets an estimated 1,000 megawatt hours of electricity while cutting carbon emissions by an estimated 600 tons each year.
