Angela Merkel is Germany's first female chancellor, and has been repeatedly named the most powerful woman in the world by Forbes magazine. TIME magazine also named her a "hero for the environment" in 2007 for her longtime efforts to tackle climate change, which date back to the 1990s and helped pave the way for 1997's Kyoto Protocol.
