Earth Hour 2009 is rapidly approaching; on Saturday, March 28 at 8:30 p.m. local time, individuals and businesses in 2,398 communities and 83 countries around the world will be turning off the lights.

Some of the largest commercial buildings in the world will be powering down, including the Sears Tower in Chicago and the famed Burj Dubai.  If your office isn’t open on the weekends, take the initiative to go through and make sure all of the lights are off before you leave on Friday.  Just because the business is closed, it doesn’t mean you can’t participate.

Find out if your community is officially participating in Earth Hour 2009 by downloading the Cities Onboard list (PDF).

On a personal note, participating in the 2008 event was such an empowering moment for my local mom’s group that we have a weekly Earth Hour.  Every Friday night at 8 p.m., dozens of moms in Arizona power down and spend some electricity-free quality time with their families.
