What contributed to the decline of manufacturing in the U.S.?

In the late 20th century, the U.S. began importing more than it exported, and with trade agreements, outsourcing labor became a viable option — especially as China entered the global market with its significantly lower wages. Meanwhile, the U.S. began a transition into a service-based economy, a trend that continues today.
