American beech

You can recognize American beech trees (Fagus grandifolia) by their smooth, silver gray trunks. This tree is difficult to transplant. It's happiest in rich, moist, and well-drained soils of zones 3 to 9. Its foliage turns golden yellow in the fall and that combined with its trunk creates a striking autumnal vision.
