American beech

You can recognize American beech trees (Fagus grandifolia) by their smooth, silver gray trunks. This tree is difficult to transplant, so it's happiest in rich, moist, and well-drained soils of zones 3 to 9. Its foliage gets golden yellow in the fall and that makes with its trunk makes for a striking autumnal vision.
