European beech

Like its American counterpart, the European beech trees (Fagus sylvatica) has a smooth gray trunk. Allegedly, it can handle a more diverse range of soils than the American beech, but the European beech still prefers rich, moist and well-drained soils, but in zones 4 to 7. If you want to tell it apart from an American beech, a European beech is typically shorter and its bark is a darker gray.
