European hornbeam

Growing between 40 and 60 feet tall, the European hornbeam (Carpinus betulus) has a smooth trunk with a sinewy fluting running its length. The hornbeam grows in zones 4 to 8 and likes medium moist, well-drained soils. If you're growing this specimen as a tree, don't worry about pruning it; however, it does make for an attractive hedge, so prune it from late summer to mid-winter.
