Paper birch

Best grown in zones 2 to 6, the paper birch (Betula papyrifera) has chalk white bark that peels away to reveal a brown-and-orange inner bark. The tree requires minimal pruning, but it thrives in cooler climates and partial shade. It needs consistently moist soil.
