Shagbark hickory

The shagbark hickory (Carya ovata) has a smooth gray bark when it's young, but as it ages, that bark exfoliates as long curling stripes. This mammoth tree — it can grow to between 70 and 90 feet tall — needs plenty of room to grow. It likes rich, moist and well-drained soil grows best in zones 4 to 8.
