Trident maple

The trident maple (Acer buergerianum) has a scaly, exfoliating bark that gets more ornamental with age, in gray, orange and brown. Native to Asia, its green leaves turn to attractive fall colors once the temperatures cool. It will grow well, but slowly, in medium moisture, well-drained soils in USDA hardiness zones 5 to 9.
