Pioneer Square, Seattle
Not all pergolas are draped with greenery. This Victorian-style, iron-and-glass Seattle landmark was built in 1909 as a grand entry to a lavish underground restroom. Set in a park in the area of downtown where Seattle was founded, the pergola was designated as a national landmark in 1977. In 2001, an 18-wheeler crashed into and destroyed the pergola, which has since been restored.
